Commments:
We run them on our Boxster Spec (BSR) cars primarily for their cooling characteristics on high speed demanding tracks. If you are looking for a less expensive alternative take a look at the OP Parts discs. We run them on our BSX cars and they work great. If you are going to be running a high speed track with heavy braking zones or endurance event, spend the money on the Zimmermans.
Some customers have asked about lower cost cross-drilled rotors that have come on the market recently. Here's our take.
The critical issue with cross-drilled rotors used in high performance driving situations is the material (i.e. steel) used in manufacturing. In this case rotors do not wear out because of loss of material (i.e. thinning) due to the material wearing away but heat or the number of heat cycles. As the steel heats up and cools down it becomes more brittle. Over time the steel begins to crack - usually starting from the drilled holes. This is normal. As they age the cracks get longer. You should consider replacing your rotors as those cracks become longer than 1/4 inch or the cracks begin to connect the holes. If you do not replace the rotors at this point they will ultimately crack through and fail with undesirable results. See picture of cracked rotor in gallery.
We have used Zimmerman rotors for years and they have proven to be a quality product and reliable. We cannot speak for some of the more inexpensive rotors on the market. They might be OK for daily driver use but we encourage you to do your homework if you are going to be using them on the track.
